#9 Slowing Down Without Giving Up: The Beauty of Growing Older Gracefully

Carried Through Every Season

“I will still be carrying you when you are old. Your hair will turn grey, and I will still carry you. I made you, and I will carry you to safety.”Isaiah 46:4

Isn’t that such a comforting promise? God reminds us that no matter how old we get, He’s still there — carrying, guiding, and loving us through every stage of life.

Let’s be honest — as the years go by, we all start to feel a few more aches and pains than we used to. Sometimes, it feels like our bodies are hinting that it’s time for a little “personal MOT.” And while a few chronic health issues might show up, it’s amazing how much of us still works beautifully!

It’s important to focus on those “good bits” — the parts that do work well, the things we can still enjoy and do with gratitude. After all, there’s wisdom in paying attention to what’s still strong instead of what’s slipping a little.

As we age, life naturally slows down a bit — and that’s okay. Maybe we don’t move quite as quickly or multitask the way we used to. But does that really matter? Not at all. In fact, slowing down often helps us notice more, feel more, and live more fully.

A dear friend of mine learned this the hard way. She pushed herself relentlessly, even into her late 60s, until one day she suffered a massive heart attack — all because she didn’t give herself permission to slow down. It was a wake-up call for her, and honestly, for me too.

Slowing down doesn’t mean giving up. It means being wise — listening to our bodies and our minds, and letting ourselves breathe. God doesn’t want us to rush through the days; He wants us to enjoy them. To smell the roses, notice the sky, and feel the sunshine on our faces.

Think about an old family pet — how he slows down with age, naps in the warm sunlight, and takes life at his own gentle pace. He doesn’t worry about what the younger pets are doing; he just enjoys his moments. There’s such wisdom in that simplicity.

We, too, can find our own “place in the sun.” Maybe it’s a comfy chair by the window, a quiet morning walk, or a moment of stillness with a cup of tea. A comfortable frame of mind is one of life’s best gifts — and it’s free.

Of course, it’s still important to stay alert to our thoughts. If you find yourself losing interest in people, or caught in self-pity or regret, remind yourself that the past is done — and today is a fresh start. You’ve had good days and hard days, just like everyone else, and both have shaped you beautifully.

So embrace this new season. Try something you love. Maybe you’ll climb a mountain (literal or figurative), or maybe you’ll simply sit by the water and dip your toes in. Both are wonderful choices.

These years can be golden — full of creativity, faith, and quiet joy — if we let them be.
God is still with us, still renewing us, still giving us purpose.

“He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age.”Ruth 4:15

Here’s to growing older with grace, peace, and the unshakable joy of knowing that God still carries us — every step of the way. 🌿
