Strength at Any Age: The Empowering Benefits of Weightlifting

I am now 69 and I lift weights five days a week. Although I have shoulder problems and arthritis I find strengthening my muscles adds so many benefits that is is worth making an effort for.

Its never too late to start and here are some benefits to regular weight training that I have found keeps me fit and strong.

Weight-bearing exercise is beneficial for us women over 60 for several reasons:

Bone Health

As people age, especially women, they are more prone to osteoporosis, a condition characterized by weakened bones. Weight-bearing exercises help maintain and improve bone density by stimulating bone-forming cells. Weight-bearing exercises can reduce the risk of fractures and osteoporosis-related issues.

Muscle Strength

Weight-bearing exercises, including resistance training, help build and maintain muscle mass. Weight-bearing exercises are crucial for overall strength, balance, and stability. Strong muscles also support the joints, reducing the risk of falls and injuries.

Joint Health

Regular weight-bearing exercise can contribute to joint health by promoting flexibility and range of motion. It also helps lubricate the joints, reducing stiffness and discomfort associated with ageing.

Metabolism and Weight Management

Engaging in weight-bearing exercises can boost metabolism and aid in weight management. As metabolism tends to slow down with age, incorporating these exercises can help maintain a healthy weight and body composition.

Cardiovascular Health

Many weight-bearing exercises, such as brisk walking, hiking, or dancing, can also benefit cardiovascular. A healthy cardiovascular system is essential for overall well-being and can contribute to a lower risk of heart-related issues.

Mood and Mental Health

Exercise has been linked to improved mood and mental well-being. Weight-bearing activities, like other forms of exercise, can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Exercise is essential as mental health becomes increasingly recognized as a crucial aspect of overall health in ageing populations.

Functional Independence

Maintaining my independence is so important to me! Maintaining strength and mobility through weight-bearing exercises supports functional independence. Being able to perform everyday activities with ease enhances the quality of life for older individuals.

It is wise that when starting a new exercise program, women over 60 need to consult with their healthcare provider and possibly work with a fitness professional to ensure the activities are safe and suitable for their individual needs and health conditions.
